01Chapter

Treasury was flying blind

Nova Labs' finance team ran a nine-figure book across 14 currencies from a spreadsheet exported nightly. By the time anyone saw a position, it was up to 24 hours stale — and the old dashboard took four seconds to load a single view.

The ask: one screen, always live, fast enough that traders keep it open all day. I owned the whole build — data model, streaming layer, interface — working directly with the CFO and two traders.

Stream everything, render only what moves

Positions flow from the ledger into Postgres, fan out through Redis pub/sub, and reach the browser over a single multiplexed WebSocket. The grid is virtualised and diff-patched — a price tick re-renders one cell, not one table.

Design happened in code: every component shipped behind a flag to the traders' machines the same week it was sketched. Three rounds of that loop killed two dashboards' worth of features nobody needed.

The first tool our traders open — and the last thing they close.
